St Paul’s Church Seaton Sluice

 

The commission brief was to create a series of eight double glazed units with sandblasted designs on the inner face of each unit. The design of the glass work for the arched topped windows in the church is non-literal, contemporary and flowing and depicts an abstract interpretation of the panorama outside the church, including the differing moods of the sea, rocks, sand dunes, farmland, beach, waves and trees. As the main impact of the church is the light, it was important to increase the light levels, bringing the outside world into the space. The previously existing glazing was poor quality rolled glass thus obscuring the views beyond the church to the sea and fields.

Creating new windows has achieved a new balance for the interior of the church, between the calm quiet of the church space and the beauty of the world beyond its walls.
